Imposter Syndrome
Akeso Course
Imposter Syndrome
Levels of imposter syndrome are high amongst doctors. It is associated with depression, anxiety, burnout, job dissatisfaction, and may deter individuals from taking on new roles.
In January 2024, Akeso ran a new 6- month pilot course on the Imposter Syndrome for 24 delegates, consisting of a combination of face-to-face sessions, individual coaching, and peer support, facilitated by award-winning speaker and expert coach: Hannah Miller https://www.hellosidekick.co/home-idv
Objectives
The programme had the following objectives:
● Provide Participants with a combination of individual and group coaching to explore their imposter feelings and offer practical strategies.
● To build a community of professionals to offer peer support in managing imposter feelings, potentially extending beyond the programme.
● To involve an expert speaker in this subject area to offer strategies to participants based on their experience.
The Programme
The programme consisted of:
1. Two group face-to-face sessions with Hannah Miller, exploring the imposter syndrome in detail and offering practical tips to overcome it
2. Two 1:1 virtual coaching session with a trained coach to review material from the sessions and explore how it applies to their personal circumstances.
3. 1. A final group virtual session with Hannah Miller to reflect and review in June 2024
Conclusion
The imposter course allowed participants to develop valuable strategies to overcome imposter syndrome by recognising it as a common experience, embracing vulnerability, and focusing on strengths rather than perfectionism. It empowered them to be kinder to themselves, stop seeking external validation, and confidently share their feelings with others. Many found the course life-changing, insightful, and essential for personal and professional growth, with a strong emphasis on self-awareness and the importance of nurturing oneself.
